Shane Battier Plays Defense, So What?

(I was being nagged to read this article from NYT magazine, and so wrote the following:)

okay, okay- i just read it.  probably because i went into it wanting to disagree, i disagree.

fine, Battier is a lock-down defender; i don't watch the NBA and so didn't necessarily know that, but it fits perfectly with my impression of him.  what i dislike about the article is that Lewis totally overstates the degree to which (a) statistics are characterizing the situation, and (b) the Rockets are doing anything new or great.  it's vintage Lewis to write as though the person he's covering is so incredibly smart and everyone else in the industry/sport is living in the Dark Ages.

Do you believe A-Rod?

Dirk Hayhurst

That's it:  Dirk Hayhurst.  Heckuva name.

Quick Look at Porcello

Porcello's an interesting prospect- K rate around 5 per 9 IP, but scouting reports and ERA/WHIP look great.  I've got a funny feeling that he'll go off this year ... didn't Ben Sheets have low K rates but very good ERAs coming up the ladder?

Everyone Now Expects A-Rod to Go Off

Matthews expects A-Rod to use the 'roid story as motivation and hit the be-jesus out of the ball, and so do I.  Reminds me of the Patriots and Spy-Gate before their historic '06-'07 season, where they were out to prove the success wasn't all about cheating.

Tim McCarver Must Die

Lists like this generally make me want to kill someone/myself.

Musburger at 3 is simply offensive.  There is no one more annoying.  Except maybe Chris Berman.  And how is he even on the list?  As annoying as he is in the studio, he is worse in the booth.

Marv should be higher.  Mel Allen should be higher.  Vin Scully should be in the top 3.

Rotoworld: Zack Greinke on Pace to be the G.O.A.T.

 From their nugget:

"Most thought Greinke would test free agency when eligible in two years. He would have been just 27, and with the way he's improving, he could have been in line for one of the biggest contracts ever given out to a pitcher."

Have to agree ... with that high-90s heat and pinpoint control, Zack-Attack seems on track to be the best in the game.

Michael Young Not So Valuable as a 3B

Maybe he gets dealt and stays at SS, but not looking great right now.

Am I the Only One Who Thinks Tim Tebow is a Pro QB?

Tagged:

Granted, watching last night's game, it was easy to see why Sam Bradford is a huge prospect.  I can't think of a time I've ever seen a college QB throw that accurately.  But Tebow certainly made some big passing plays, same as he has every time I've watched him.  His passing stats have been plenty big (I'm not bothering to look them up), and it's been documented in article after article what a film hound he is, how well he understands opposing defenses.  So why all the negative hype?
